The individual who repeatedly postpones important tasks despite promising otherwise gradually constructs an identity characterized by procrastination.

It's remarkably easy to maintain a positive self-image based on our good intentions rather than our actual behaviors. We comfort ourselves with thoughts of "I'm the kind of person who would help" rather than confronting the reality that we didn't actually help when given the opportunity.
