Don't Wait for January

January is overrated.

Every year around this time, I watch smart people quietly give up on the rest of the year. Nobody announces it. But you can hear it in the language. "Let's revisit after the holidays." "That's a Q1 thing." "New year, new start."

I've said it myself. Plenty of times.

Here's what a long career has taught me: the year doesn't get decided in January. It gets decided in the last nine weeks of the one before it.

January is just when the results show up.

The fresh start is a beautiful story. Clean calendar. Blank page. A version of you who finally gets up early and says no to the right things. But it's a story that asks you to wait. And waiting is one of the most expensive habits most of us have.

Look at what's actually happening right now. The days are getting shorter. The clocks are about to fall back. Someone, somewhere, is sketching plans for next year, whether you're in the room or not. The people who walk into January with momentum didn't find it on New Year's Day. They built it in November while everyone else coasted.

That's the opportunity. Late in the year, the field thins out. Attention drifts toward the holidays. Inboxes slow down. A small, deliberate move made now carries further than it would in the noise of spring.

This isn't about grinding through the holidays. Rest matters. Family matters more. I'm not asking you to work harder in December. I'm asking you to stop treating the next two months as a waiting room.

There's a quieter benefit, too. When you start something before the calendar tells you it's time, it belongs to you. It isn't a resolution. It isn't a New Year's performance. It's a decision you made on an ordinary Thursday because it was the right thing to do. Those decisions tend to last. They aren't propped up by the novelty of a date, so they don't collapse when the novelty fades in February.

And if you stumble? Good. You'll have stumbled in November, learned something, and adjusted by the time everyone else is just getting started.

The new year isn't coming to rescue you. You can start the rescue now.

Here's my challenge for this week: pick the one thing you've been saving for January. The conversation, the project, the habit, the hard call. Take the first real step on it before Sunday. Not the whole thing. Just the first step, somewhere it counts.

What have you been waiting until January to start?
