Current Me vs. Future Me

Most of us imagine that even as we age, we will still aspire to improve ourselves and our situation; but how often do we turn broad goals into real objectives that adress our current shortcomings compassionately?

Make a list of your current habits, goals, skills, values, etc. and compare it to what you would like your future self to be like. Where are the gaps? What needs work?

Imagine having a conversation with your future self in 5, 10, or 20 years. What does that wiser future you advise current you to do more or less of? What warnings or encouragement do they give?

Write a note to your future self listing your current struggles, doubts, and frustrations. Then write an encouraging note back from your future wiser self offering support.

Create a side by side chart or "report card" comparing current you to future you in different categories - health habits, financial habits, relationship habits, personal growth habits, career or education status, etc. Grade yourself honestly.

Make two lists of how you currently spend your time versus how you would ideally like to spend your time in the future. Compare the lists to see where you need better time management now.

Reflect on your current EMOTIONS and how positive/negative they are most days. Then reflect on how emotionally balanced and resilient you want to be in the coming years.

The key is to compare your current self compassionately but honestly to the person you aspire to become in the future. That gap analysis will help motivate and guide you towards self-improvement. Regular check-ins with your "future self" in this way will keep you on track.
