High Standards, High Support

There's a false choice that shows up everywhere. You can be demanding or you can be caring. You can push people or you can support them. Pick one.

The best leaders refuse to pick. They hold both. There are four ways you can lead.

Low standards, low support. This is neglect. Nobody grows here.

High standards, low support. The demanding boss who sets the bar high but offers no help reaching it. People burn out or learn to hide their struggles.

Low standards, high support. This one feels warm, but it's a quiet form of disrespect. When you tell someone "it's fine" when it's not, you're really saying: I don't believe you're capable of more.

High standards, high support. This is where transformation happens. The message is clear: I believe you can do extraordinary things, and I'm going to be right here helping you get there.

Most of us default to one side based on temperament. Some are wired to push. Others are wired to comfort. The hard part is holding both at the same time, being willing to make someone uncomfortable with where they are while making them feel safe enough to hear it.

That tension is the whole game.

Before any important conversation, ask yourself two questions. Am I being honest about what excellence looks like here? And am I giving this person everything they need to get there?

If the answer to either is no, adjust. If you're all push and no presence, slow down and listen. If you're all warmth and no challenge, find the courage to raise the bar.

The people in your life don't need you to choose between being kind and being honest. They need you to be both. At the same time. Consistently. That's how you communicate the most powerful message any person can receive: You are capable of more, and you are not alone in getting there.
